Overview of the VOICE Lab
The VocalizED Identity Crafting and Exploration (VOICE) research lab is housed in the English Department at Stony Brook University, and is a collaborative cultural identity exploration and narration hub. This hub supports immigrants and other marginalized populations in utilizing the tools and platforms of multiliteracies to explore, author, and disseminate their identity narratives. These platforms include podcasting, video narratives, and other digital and multimodal tools. We aim to promote social justice advocacy, increase recognition of intersectional identities, and foster stronger bonds of allyship and acceptance across differences.
The VOICE lab illuminates theory and practice, primarily focusing on PK-20 populations. Our research activities supporting participants' identity navigation and crafting will help advance theoretical understanding of marginalized populations' identity navigation process. Our research also influences innovation in English Language Arts and other literacy-based pedagogies and education policy.
